Newspapers in the battleground states of Florida and Ohio were riddled with ads from the conservative political action committee Government is Not God claiming the darndest things. Politifact, the Pulitzer Prize winning factcheck website, took notice and essentially gave what can only be described as a serious smackdown.
Founded in 1992 by William Murray, the current chairmen of the Religious Freedom Coalition, the Government is Not God’s mission, as outlined on its website, seeks to ensure, “…the election to Congress of men and women who hold conservative beliefs on both moral and economic issues.” Those who seek the PAC’s support, “…must complete a questionnaire concerning their stand on issues such as abortion, gambling, drug use, home schooling, school prayer, property rights, Second Amendment rights, welfare, defense and taxation.“
In essence, the group that was founded by the leader of the Religious Freedom Coalition seeks to place only those candidates into Congress who adhere solely to their religious and conservative values disregarding others who may subscribe to a different set of beliefs and values. How does this foster the freedom of religion and expression we all are supposed to enjoy in this country if Congress is populated by representatives who adhere to a narrow, singular set of beliefs? The irony displayed here was a bit befuddling and was worth drawing attention to.
The claims presented in the various newspaper advertisements were even more confounding as they painted a layered portrait of the invented Obama many in the conservative voting public have come to believe exists. While these may produce bouts of laughter from the common-sense minded it’s also rather disturbing when one realizes how many truly accept all this as the god’s honest fact. Is this not an exemplary illustration of the factless environment in which politics of the United States currently resides.
“Barack Hussein Obama will … force doctors to assist homosexuals in buying surrogate babies.”
“Barack Hussein Obama will .. force Christian organizations to pay for abortions.”
“Barack Hussein Obama will … force local authorities to allow Occupy protesters to live in parks.”
“Barack Hussein Obama will … force Christian schools to hire non-Christian teachers.”
